1. Choose a contractor you feel comfortable with.

  2. Verify that your contractor is insured; ask for a “Certificate of Insurance” showing both liability (for your property) AND worker’s compensation (for their workers).

  3. Ask for and confirm references.

  4. Check for home improvement or appropriate contractors license; such as PA HIC License No. 007181.

Beware of:

  1. 1)Someone who doesn’t use contracts or is very vague in their scope of work (A written contract helps both the contractor and the customer get what they expect).

  2. 2)A painter that competes based on price alone. (If these guys even show up to do the work, you may have far more problems than the cheap price is worth).

  3. 3)A painting company that does not carry worker's compensation insurance. It's illegal in the state of Pennsylvania to not carry worker's compensation insurance if you have employees. THIS IS A HUGE RED FLAG! If their employees are not covered by worker's compensation insurance and someone does get hurt while on the job YOU (the homeowner) are responsible. Just remember we are dealing with heavy equipment and dangerous heights, most of the time, so an injury can very well be life changing or result in death.
